Abbott and Costello comics number 2

Out of nowhere after 3 years of blogging my bestestest friend in the whole wide world who rarely ever visits any of my blogs ( Strange because I know him for nearly 40 years ) Sends me a link to ebay for this Abbott and Costello comic book from 1942. He said “I thought you might want this for your SHEENA blog”
Now just that thought in and of itself is very thoughtful in my opinion…but I thought to myself “ It’s my SHANNA blog. ” But the entire thought is what counts right? That’s a friend who comes across something like this rare comic and say’s “ I know who’ll appreciate this! ” the rest of the facts are irrelevant.
But the image was too small for me to use. So I did a web search and I turned up 3 pages from the comic as well as a better image of the cover! I would buy the comic book but who the heck has 80 bucks to go dropping on a comic book. MY WIFE’LL KILL ME !!! lol. However it is a comic book I’d love to have.
I’d love to know who did the art for the book. Annny way…enjoy checking out some of this bondage art from the 40’s. Wertham is rolling in his grave right now!

In a " Land that time forgot " or " Journey to the center of the earth " composition one can always count on Frank Frazetta to provide one awesome fur clad knife wielding warrior woman. Frank has always been the greatest of the great and this painting is only another example. WHO can provide me with the background on this piece..is it a book cover? I'd like to know...this way I can go hunt it down and buy it. ;)

If I had a nice trophy case and a private man cave room of my own this would be smack dab in the middle of the display....but I don't. Over on facebook Michael Maikowsky created a fan page entitled " The artistry of John Buscema " of which I am a member of this fan group. During the week fellow member Bojan posted a cool Tarzan drawing from out of Marvels Tarzan issue 3...then later he posted the Frazetta piece...we were wondering and had a general discussion about whether or not Big John's piece was inspired by or even influenced slightly by Frazetta's version...what do you folks think? Bojan also shared a little story about the legend of the Frazetta piece. It's a commision and Frank originally drew the piece with ol' Tarz havin' a stiffy. But the commisionee asked him to change it...he obliged. Cool story eh..Enjoy.

Searching the web today for images from the new CONAN 2012 calendar I ran across this brand new 2012 TARZAN calendar. Upon seeing the cover I did a copy and paste and e-mailed Joe Jusko...I asked " Joe did you do this cover for this new calendar? " He replied " Yup " he then sent me an uncropped full image of the completed piece. That background is breathtaking and that Lion is magnificent! I can't get over the entire painting either. The detail and skill required is unimagineable. The trees the shrubbery the sky the mountains...WOW!!!...I know this is a JUNGLE GIRLS blog...but remember TARZAN is the LORD of the JUNGLE !!! More Jungle babes to come soon enough! For now...enjoy another Joe Jusko masterpiece.

Laurence Paul Zrinzo from the Isle of Malta painted this pretty picture of SHEENA sunning herself. I met Laurence of Facebook a couple of years ago. He's a nice guy. He loves comic art and enjoys painting. He has done some remarkable recreations from Alan Davis , Alex Ross and John Byrne. He is currently working on his own original series call SAVAGE FLAME.

When someone contacted Laurence and told him he can no longer display his recreations on Facebook he was heartbroken when he had to remove the images from his profile. But Laurence would not be beaten. He began to paint his own original art of everyones favorite super heroes. Cap , Supes , Wonder Woman and Super girl as well. He is still going and you can tell he is a committed artist. Keep going Laurence and good luck in all your endeavors.

Over one hundred thousand page views or visits or whatever...that's pretty darn cool if you ask me. How many I wonder are repeat offenders? If you come to the blog and read my stuff and look at my pictures ( I borrowed from various sources and shared by the way ) Why then not just follow the blog? Regardless...I'm proud that my blog has the traffic it does because apparently I aint the only dude who loves JUNGLE WOMENS'S! I think that this momentous landmark occasion deserved something special so I drew up a pic of SHANNA and ZABU...I never drew a sabretooth before so don't mind him if he looks a bit like BILL THE CAT " ACK! "

I'm really loving this whole drawing thing again and slowly but surely I'm getting my chops back Women are not as easy for me to draw as men. Men are easy...women I have to stop and imagine what my idea of what a Jungle woman would look like, visualize it and then try to get it down on paper.

After 2 or three roughed up sketches..( With no reference photo's or other drawings to go from I whipped up this here piece of artwerks.) I hope you like it. Oh I aint done either...there will be more in the future so stay tuned. Mikey out!

My first exposure to SHANNA was in the first issue on the last page of KA-ZAR number 1 -1972 pencils by Paul Reinman...SHANNA is tied up like a sacrificial lamb. Something about that image got the wheels turning in my little 8 year old brain. Leopard print or furs on the athletic figure of a larger than life woman...sigh.

But Shanna was no pushover she regularly gave it as well as she took it and always came out on top.

Why would a guy like a female super hero? Hello? She's hot! I like Wonder Woman too got a problem with it? Plus some of the WW comics I like were done by Ross Andru and Mike ( Mickey Demeo ) Esposito.

A lot of people wonder about the sexual orientation of a guy if he likes a Woman super hero or a female pop star...they question his preference. Well let me tell ya...no questioning my orientation no Sirree! I loves me some women! Always have....I used to get in trouble for biting when I went to strip clubs...the girls would complain. I even got kicked out a few times and had to fight my way out of one club. I bite. lol...I'm married now and do not visit strip clubs anymore ( Besides they're too damned expensive ) I am a good guy and don't do anything my wife does not approve of. It's only honorable.

No I don't bite my wife. But I like to re-enact scenes from KA-ZAR number one with her sometimes!

" UP YOUR NOSE AND OUT YOUR EAR: THE FORGOTTEN MAGAZINEDaniel Best(This article originally appeared in BACK ISSUE #13 in slightly different form. Don't bother looking for that issue of Back Issue though, it's been withdrawn for some reason)As the 1970s rolled around Ross Andru and Mike Esposito were well established in the comic book industry both individually and as a team. They'd been handed some of the biggest titles at DC as a duo, and, despite a failed attempt by Ross, Mike was a fixture at Marvel. However they began to feel stifled both as artists and writers, and as a result they began to look towards the future. Realising that in order to reach their goals, which were always to create a Mad Magazine style satire book and any saleable syndicate strip, the pair would have to look further than the comfort that the big two offered them.Into this climate entered old friend Sol Brodsky. Brodsky had recently teamed up, again, with odd job publisher Israel Waldman. Instead of Brodsky merely working for Waldman, this time the pair would form a whole new company titled Skywald. Brodsky realised that he'd need dependable artists and writers at the new company, and approached Ross and Mike to be art directors, with the opportunity to write and draw whatever projects that they might be assigned. As an extra carrot Waldman promised the pair that, in time, he would print and publish a new satire magazine created by the pair. It didn't take much to convince Ross and Mike and they duly signed on.While fulfilling their duties as Skywalds art directors, the pair began to map out the new magazine. First they'd established what the book would be: satire. They'd always wanted to work on a Mad style book since the failure of 1954s Get Lost comic. This time instead of publishing a comic book, they wanted a magazine format. As Skywald were publishing magazines this was easily done. The magazine format would also allow the pair to avoid any problems with the Comics Code, a fact that would come in very handy as work progressed. The next problem was the name for the new book.As their excitement grew, the pair talked about a name for the new book. Mike had some ideas, Ross, as was his wont, didn't have many ideas for a name other than he wanted the new book to have nothing to do with anything that they'd produced previously. Mikes wife, Irene, floated the idea of naming the book Get Lost II. Ross was against this as he'd always felt that Get Lost was a failure (lasting only three issues) and that the name also reminded him of a past that he'd have preferred to forget. More than once he'd told people that if given the chance to relive his youth, he'd pass. Mike then suggested a phrase that he felt was both topical and catchy: Up Your Nose And Out Your Ear.Mike Esposito recalls: "My wife was mad at me. She wanted to call it Get Lost, like the book we did in 1953, and she was right. There was no reason why we couldn't call it Get Lost, or Get Lost II: The Comeback Of Get Lost. One morning Ross called and said that we were going to work on this new idea and he asked, 'What are we gonna call it?' and I said, 'Let's call it Up Your Nose And Out Your Ear', only because of Johnny Carson, who used to say, "May the bird of paradise fly up your nose". So Ross said, 'Yeah, why not?'"The next issue to be resolved was the books contents. Although Ross had no great love for past events, he wasn't above using art that had previously appeared in other books, or, in the case of the bulk of the contents of Up Your Nose, art that had been prepared for elsewhere but had yet to be published.Some of the characters from the different storylines included The Garlic Man, Thelma of the Apes and Count Varicose amongst many others. As the book was free of the Comics Code, it allowed Ross and Mike to adapt a previous idea, Thelma of the Apes. Revisiting and touching up the art to Thelma, Ross went all out and created a more adult strip than he'd previously done, complete with panels depicting nudity. However at the last minute Mike got cold feet and refused to ink in the more racier parts of Thelma's anatomy, such as her nipples.Garlic Man was another personal favourite with the pair. Created in the mid 1960s as a syndicate strip, it revolved around the trials and tribulations of Wilford Klutz, a man who'd been exposed to a new secret government weapon: a Garlic Bomb. The result of this exposure was that each time Klutz came into contact with any form of garlic, he'd hulk out. The results were as funny as anything on the market. Ross and Mike took the existing, unpublished Garlic Man strips and adapted them for the new magazine. Towards the latter part of the story they merely lifted panels from the strips and touched them up. Both men were happy that Garlic Man was finally seeing print in the manner that they wanted.Ross created Count Varicose in the 1950s. As work progressed on the book, they found themselves over committed (at the time Ross and Mike were working at Skywald, putting together Up Your Nose from the ground up, in addition to the pair working at DC and Mike also working at Marvel) so they passed the baton to one of their recruits - letterer and more than capable artist John Costanza."John was a letterer at Marvel, but he could design and draw as well and he did a pretty good job. Ross was editing the book and he went over John's pencils, and then John inked it himself. I didn't touch it because I was involved with the business end. I liked John's stuff and once Ross did the lay-outs for him it was kind of cute."Varicose featured some amazing ink wash effects. The existing original art for the strip is more impressive than the printed product, and marks one of the few times, if not the only time, that Costanza would ink Ross Andru.Greta Garish was a personal favourite of both Ross and Mike. "I loved the Greta Garish strip," says Mike now, "the little fat guy singing was supposed to be Marty Allen. Marty Allen was a comedian who didn't go too far, but did a lot of stuff, and he actually looked like that. Ross created that whole story. He wanted the look of the 1929, with the clothes, the car and I think we got that look. The strip has a dated look throughout the whole story, the look of that period. We were always able to adapt and understand a period that we needed to capture. We were very versatile."By this time the book was almost complete. Wanting to set it apart from its competitors, such as Mad, the pair fielded ideas from everyone, even if some of those ideas weren't as family friendly as they might have appeared to be on the surface. Again, freed up from the Comics Code, the pair allowed imagination to run wild, and in one case Ross took a disgusting habit performed by Mike's dog and turned it into a private running joke throughout the book.Mike remembers, "My wife, Irene, created the idea of 'Pick Your Nose'. We had all these noses and you had to pick your nose as a contest and the answers were all in the back. We had Barbara Streisand's nose, Jimmy Durante's nose, all different people and we fooled them on one of them. We figured they got fooled. It looked like Mickey Mouse and it turned out it was Minnie Mouse.""On the back inside cover of the book there are all these photos of people and they're all giving comments about the book. They're all real people and Dr Killymyoung is my father. Sol Brodsky's wife is there, his son, my son is in there. Now the little dog, 'Essence Of Nurd', is my dog Mishi. The reason why we called it Essence Of Nurd is because the dog loved to eat shit. She'd crap in the back yard and then eat it. She must have had a traumatic, frightening experience as a pup, she must have been starving or something. That's why we called her 'Essence Of Nurd' because she was so full of it. And Nurd, to us, was turd."Nurd was Ross's invention. The Queen Of Nurd, she sits on her throne and there's all shit all over the ground. You have to know where Ross was coming from; he felt the world was full of it. There's a lot going on in that book than what first appears on the surface of it."The photo routine would carry on through the book. Another of Ross' ideas was to have a running commentary through the book, one that would link the various stories and provide an interesting juxtaposition to the printed art. Despite its innocent beginnings, this idea would eventually lead to the downfall of the book.Recruiting his daughter and her friend, Mike set up a photo shoot. His daughter also brought in another friend, an aspiring actor who went by his real name: Joe Snow.Mike wasn't convinced that Joe Snow's name was indeed Joe Snow. "I looked him up and his father's name was Snow, and he was so proud of what he did in that book. I paid him $25 and we had a contract in case we did more of them. He was featured all the time: Joe Snow and The Tribe. The Tribe consisted of my daughter and her friend Caryn and I paid each of them $25 for the one shoot."At the photo shoot, Ross' frustrations as a director came to the fore. Not one to merely sit back and watch the action unfold he began to direct both the action and the photographer, much to the amusement of Mike."I'll never forget it, Ross drove the photographer crazy. He'd say to my daughter, 'Lean this way, bend your arm the same way' and then he'd be standing there saying 'No, no, no, tilt your head back, a bit more, a bit more'. He'd jump on the set and interfere with the lighting and everything, but that's the way he was." Ross and Mike then took the photographs and drew in backgrounds. As the book had no color the pair felt they had to give it some texture and variety.Envisioning a long life to the magazine Mike came up with the idea of printing up shirts. The front of the shirts would feature the magazines logo, Up Your Nose with a finger in place of the 'U'. The back of the shirts featured the rest of the title, 'Out Your Ear'. The shirts were printed professionally and eventually sold a reasonable amount, providing a substantional profit (and if anyone has one of the shirts for sale then contact me via this magazine). Mike's son took to wearing the shirts for years to school to annoy the teachers. Mike Esposito protégée, Dave Hunt also obtained a shirt, which he still has to this day.The problems then came with the last strip for the first issue, Ace Of Spades. Ace Of Spades had it's origins in a conversation that Mike remembered having with a lady back in 1951."People are funny. All we were doing was trying to show how people are. There's this black town that was getting upset because they'd heard the Polish were moving in."I got the idea because when I was a young fellow visiting some relatives in Boston this woman came to me and said, "Mike, you have no idea how the neighborhood is changing". This is a little town south of Boston. "The town is changing, it's going downhill"."Well what's the matter?""They're moving in""Who?" I was thinking, is it the blacks, who could be moving in to make her so upset?"The French.""I said, "The French???" and I always remembered that. Everybody has their own enemies. Everybody has their own prejudices. It may not be the same as what people have in Brooklyn, or Manhattan, but I couldn't believe she said the French. It was like saying the Martians are moving in. And this was a little Irish woman who had so much prejudice in her against the Italians and the blacks and then said the French! I never knew a French person. I would have loved it because I took up French at school.""I remembered that when I was writing the book. I said to Ross, "We'll have all these black people on the bus line waiting for the bus to come in with a Polish family". And they're saying, "The Polish are moving in" and another guy'd be saying, "Yep, there goes the neighborhood. Next thing you know the Italians are gonna move in", and the next guy'd say, "Yeah, and then the French will move in" and it moves down the line until the second to last guy says "And the next thing you know the blacks are gonna move in". And the very last guy says "What do you mean the blacks are gonna move in? We IS the blacks!" It was a long panel with all these people waiting for the bus."We were trying to expose that ridiculous line of prejudice that people possess without thinking. They're so stupid that they're prejudiced against themselves and they don't know what they're talking about. I had a lot of problems with people thinking it was racist when it wasn't. We were trying to show how stupid racism is. The college kids loved it because they understood it, but a lot of people, like the black power groups, wanted to bomb my house. Ace Of Spades was a little black boy on the plantations and he became super when he yelled out 'Mohhamed Ali' and pounded his chest. He blew up the KuKluxKlan, he fought them and we were trying to show how stupid it all is and some groups didn't understand it. They started to threaten me so I took my name and address off the indicia of the second issue."Finally with the assistance of Sol Brodsky, John Costanza, writer Barbara Friedlander and artists Rene Atlass and Daniel Haskett, who'd have his own strip throughout the book named 'Daniel's Den', something which was overlooked by those claiming the book was racist as Daniel was black, the book was ready to be published. Ross and Mike took the finished results to Israel Waldman. Mike recalls what happened next."When time came for the magazine to be published Waldman said, 'I'm sorry to tell you this but I don't think I can publish that magazine. I lost $60,000 last month and projected it's going to be another $60,000 every month if not more and I can't keep doing that.'"Feeling dejected Ross and Mike went and shopped the magazine to all the publishers that were left in the business, including Fawcett Publications. "Fawcett was still a big force in the industry, even though they'd cut back on all the comic books. This guy who was working up there fell in love with it. He said, 'This is great! This is going to be another Mad Magazine. We want this'. Ross and I got so excited and went to the elevator and he said, 'Come back at around lunchtime'. We went back and he said 'I'm sorry to tell you this and I don't know how to say it, but the head guy here was very upset about it'. One of the reasons why was because we had a joke about Polish characters in it and he took offence."Faced with the problem of not having a publisher didn't stop Ross and Mike. They'd been amongst the first artists to break away from the mainstream comic book industry and self-publish. In the early 1950s they'd formed MR Publications, predating Simon & Kirby's Mainline by a good three years. They'd followed that up with 1953s MikeRoss Publications. Ross and Mike were no strangers to the world of publishing. They brought Sol Brodsky in as a full partner as Skywald had gone under Brodsky was out of a job. The three formed a company named Klevart Enterprises and set about printing and distributing the first issue of Up Your Nose. Issue #1 finally appeared in March, 1972. The first print run had done amazingly well, shipping an incredible 400,000 copies. The book appeared to be a raging success and with issue #2 ready to go, and issue #3 already in the pre-production stage, Ross, Mike and Brodsky looked towards a future with wealth and complete creative control.Then the hammer dropped.Mike remembers, "Our distributor first wrote a telegram that Sol Brodsky and his wife were in tears of happiness over; it said that we were going to be bigger than Mad. We thought because we'd get so much per book that we'd all be rich. We'd be making thousands and thousands of dollars a month. We went out to celebrate and had a big dinner at a fancy restaurant, Sol and his wife and a couple of other people who were part of the book, and Ross toasted me. He said 'I'd like to make a toast to Mike Esposito. If it wasn't for Mike none of this would have happened. Here's to Mike'. Three weeks later he wanted to shoot me.""What happened was that I got another telegram following the first saying, 'Stop all publication'. I called up the guy and asked what happened. He said, 'Hundreds and thousands of books are being returned in boxes unopened from Hawaii, from Alaska, from all around the world'. When they got news that something was wrong then they didn't want them, and they didn't want them because they thought it was a drug book."Why would people think it was a drug book? Of all things in the book to attack, the perceived racism, the nudity, the crudeness of some of the concepts, the book was brought down due to one person: Joe Snow. "Joe Snow was why we eventually got into serious trouble. I remember going into one stationary store and the woman said to me, 'I'm not putting this out, it's a drug book'. I said, 'Why?' and she said 'Look, it's Joe Snow'. But it was a legitimate name; that was his name.""The wind up is that they told us to stop and cease publication. Every store owner said it's a drug book and they wouldn't put it out. I went to different stores around where I lived, Queens and places like that, and checked it out and no-one was selling the book. I thought, 'Oh my God, we're dead'.Mike was right, the book was dead. Sadly it would vanish. Mike recalls being asked to pick up the returned stock and not being able to face the disappointment of seeing the book again. He left the boxes where they sat and eventually they became landfill. It's a regret he has to this day, if only because he now realizes that he could have picked them up, for nothing, and sold the 250,000 existing copies for $5 or more. However the pain was real and it was deep for both men."We ended up at a convention, Ross and I, and we were trying to sell all the original art for whatever we could get. Finally we got rid of them for about $10 a page, anything we could get."Mike recently remembered why Ross and he decided to do the book and put so much on the line, physically, financially and emotionally. "We wanted to do the magazine because of what was on TV at the time, the ground breaking show All In The Family. Carroll O'Conner played a bigot to a T. I thought, "This guy is teaching the world how bad it is to be a bigot, but they don't get it". Then they started to laugh at it and they caught on. The manifesto of the book was a simple one. Up Your Nose was designed for people who were sick and tired of the way things were in the world, reflecting the ignorance behind racism and government policy. Most of the phoniness of the times became revealed in a satirical way through the pages of the magazine."Ross Andru and Mike Esposito went back into mainstream comics. They enjoyed one last flood of attention when they teamed up to create a critically acclaimed run on Amazing Spider-man for Marvel, but sadly they would never venture into the world of self-publishing again. I LOVE reading , I love singing , I love my wife , I love drawing , I love strumming my guitar , I love my comic books , I love my motor cycle , I love my rich and interesting back story from the time I used to get beat up on a daily basis by gangs of kids because I was a different color from them to when I almost broke my neck by jumping a ramp on a bike and my devious friend set the ramp a little higher when I was going up the hill to when I had a girlfriend who was the sweetest cutest most beautiful girl of my dreams to when she broke my heart and left me devastated and suicidal to when I went to pick up my schizophrenic brother at Pilgrim state and I saw a dude get out of control and smash an orderly in the nose and I saw blood fly and they needed to subdue him and straightjacket him and stick him with a sedative all for a cigarette. To my time at the KUBERT school and to meeting Jack Kirby , Curt Swan , Dick Giordano , Dick Ayers , Walter Simonson , Joe Kubert ( of course ) , Joe Jusko , Kevin Eastman and dozens of other comic book personalities Classic legends to the new breed. To all of the guys I am friends with on Facebook who went to KUBERT school with me who remember me and are successfully plying the trade of cartooning to this day. To my independent comic book/ fanzine HOLY WAR to sitting at a convention across from Walt Simonson , To when I joined a rock and roll band and sang up on a stage in front of people sometimes hundreds and sometimes just about a dozen or so. To when I met my wife to our wedding to our Honeymoon…to when I brought my 14 year old son into our home because his Mom could not handle his uncontrollable teen angst. To everything and everyone that made me who I am today and everything in between. I love it all. BUT…
I was reading “Michael May’s Adventure blog” and I saw that he was talking about the broad scope and direction of his blog and that this blog “SHANNA the She devil blogger” was among one of his favorite blogs. He noted that this blog is generally just about one thing in particular and not very broad by comparison in that it’s about Jungle girls and not much more. It got me thinking “ Is my blog ( Or blogs ) one directional and one dimensional and are they too secular in their spectrum and range?”
Well if you dissect it. You will find that not only do I have an affinity for ladies in animal fur but…I love comic books about them and movies and films and TV-shows ( Including cartoons ) I appreciate the beauty of a model wearing animal print under garments or bathing suits or lingerie and I always ( Occasionally actually ) provide a little quip or joke or amusing anecdote. But when you step back and view it from outside…you just see a blog about Jungle Girls. There are many directions I can go while blogging on the subject and have and do. But mostly in fact I do it to keep myself sane and happy and I like sharing. I enjoy Michaels blog and his writings and musings as well as the fact that I know he’s reading my stuff too.
I want to thank Michael for giving me food for thought and for reminding me that life is an ADVENTURE and we all have a story to tell. I have been around and I have seen a lot of interesting things and have had interesting experiences. It does not stop the Adventure continues.

Check out this cool ass thing I found on the web while browsing for images of my favorite covers for a Will Eisner's SPIRIT post. ( I do not know if they're original pencils ) Pencils from Jim Steranko's comic book folder from the 70's of the Jungle Girl who I believe is SHEENA. The art of comics is captured in a beautiful comparison shot in a piece by one of the greats in the industry. Jim Steranko. The man is a "Master" excellent masterful artwork indeed.

I just purchased this DVD I never had a copy on DVD before. Now I can discard of my old VHS. This is a wax figure you can find of Raquel at Madame Tussaud's in HOLLYWOOD California.
I really don't think the likeness is all that true to life....but if they say that's her...I'll take their word for it.

JUNGLE GIRL SIGHTING IN THE MOVIE PAUL!!!

I obtained an advance screening pass ( from my local comic book store ) to see the new Extra terrestrial comedy PAUL starring SIMON PEGG and the voice of SETH ROGEN...the movie opens with two comic book collectors and English blokes on HOLIDAY. They come to the States to go to COMIC CON in San Diego.
Very early in the movie right around the 16 minute mark...Simons character is in his hotel room reading a comic book in bed. What comic book is he reading you ask? JUNGLE GIRL!!!
Now there are quite a few comic books in the movie and another one that is seen actually about 5 times in a scene that takes place in a comic book store is RED SONJA from DYNAMITE entertainment. ( In the background of course. ) But the idea...of the film and the whole premise is quite original. They drop references left and right in the movie to other SCi fi films and TV shows But I do gotta say...that this is one of the funniest FUNKIN' Movies I have seen in about 8oo trillion years!!!! My advice to you...go see the movie and laugh your sweet hairy space man balls off!!! Of course...look for all the comic book shots and movie references and get back to me.
List them out for me in casr I missed some..lol.

Probably no other artist in the fantasy art genre inspired more people than Frazetta. His style and technique were unmatched. The man was a true master and showed everyone how to do it.

The people out there today...Fantasy artists...book covers and film posters and comic book artists. When they sit down to paint, draw or sketch...they are thinking....about Frank. In some form or fashion they are. That is how powerful his work is.

I was visiting ROMITA MAN Mike Burkey's site just looking around and came across these cool samples. Now I have to admit...I never heard of that strip TIGA...but man that post apocolyptic jungle girl got my attention. That is how you draw a woman in a loin cloth.

Next is a character design sketch/model sheet for the film FIRE and ICE the movie Frank collaborated on with Ralph Bakshi.

Look at those awesome images of PRINCESS TEEGRA in all her fine full figured form.

For those of you who have not seen the movie...go get one. Order it on Ebay or whatever. You need to do yourself that favor and see this movie. OK!? Okay.

One day...today in fact I came across his gallery at COMICVINE and saw a few lovely Jungle girl drawings I wanted to share with you. Thanks for being a great artist Dave. Keep up the good work. Pro's like you make my self appointed job easier.

"Dave Hoover is a comic book artist and one of the notable 'good girl' artists working today.

Dave Hoover was a student of art and animation at the Art Institute of Philadelphia in the 1970's. He began his artistic career as an animator in 1977 and worked for eight years on many television productions and two feature films. He became a comic book artist in 1987 and worked as a penciler on many titles for both DC and Marvel, including lengthy runs on Starman and Captain America. He was the primary artist for the entire 13-issue run of The Wanderers title for DC.
Since 1999 Hoover has been teaching art as a faculty member of his old alma mater, the Art institute of Philadelphia. In recent years he has become known for his pinups and 'good girl' art. He has said that Supergirl is his favorite character to draw, and has probably created more pinups of her than any other character."

ARTICLE from BACK ISSUE # 43

These pages are scans direct from the BACK ISSUE magazine # 43 “ Born to be wild “ issue. Along with a proper scan of the cover.
There are two elements I liked about the magazine ( Not including the Frank Cho cover ) and they is as follers.
1 - The author of the article pretty much thinks the way I do. All the elements from this blog - which pre-dates the magazine.
He even stole the title of the article from the cover of SHANNA # 1 just like me!!! ( In the name of fun )
All the important factors of SHANNA’s relationship with Marvel comics are mentioned in said article.
2 – The Carole Sueling interview section of the article. Her insightful inside look at the way things were done in that day and age was very enlightening. Her interaction with the editors and her co-creators was very important. Carole never did that many comic books. But she helped to create an ICON.
These days…..any fan of comic books knows who the heck SHANNA is. All in all I rate the article straight “A” Shoot….except for the interview…he probably used my blog for research…lol.

Carole Seuling (b. 1939) is best-known for her creation of Shanna the She-Devil. She wrote or co-wrote all but the last issue of the original five-issue 1972-1973 Marvel Comics series, with Steve Gerber co-writing issues #1 and #4 and writing issue #5 and some follow-ups. Gerber defers all credit for creation of Shanna and such characters as the Mandrill directly to her. While surfing the web and looking for images of Shanna , Sheena or whomever I can find. Artists Like Frank Cho or Budd Root or Bruce Timm or whatever. Sometimes I come across some pretty cool stuff. I found some very nice illustrations that are digital paint brush images and then I found some neat Sheena art from an image search. The best thing about all this is the searching. Sometimes I find image links to my blog here and sometimes I find links to other blogs on Blogspot...If I like what they're posting I follow that blog. In many case the artists names are not accompanying the art...I don't like that. SO here are a few more pieces I found in my search if anyone has any idea about who did what...let me know. Here is a copy of Cho's unretouched box art for the Ka-zar,Shanna,Zabu action figure 3 pack. I guess the actual box art on the figure package was a bit too risque. But as you can see from this example they could have left it alone. It's tasteful.

Well you can buy the costume and have your wife berate you and teach you archery right in your livingroom....if anyone actually does this...send me the pics and I'll post'em.

Fellow blogger brother Darius Whiteplume made me hep to another greast jungle girl creation. Here is an article lifted from comic book resources dot commmmm.

Nat Gertler: “Salimba” is a jungle girl comic created in the mid-1980s, drawn by Paul Chadwick before he won all those Eisner awards for his “Concrete” series, and written by Stephen Perry, known for his comics such as “Timespirits” and his TV work on such shows as “Thundercats” and “Silverhawks.” It definitely comes from the tradition of jungle girl comics, but it brings with it Perry's own spiritual, mystic sensibility. It also varies from the jungle girl tradition [in that she] isn't white, she isn't an outsider come to save the jungle. But I don't want that to make this sound like some sort of heavy thought-piece or lecture - this is a comic with pirates and monsters and, yes, zombie apes.

How did you first encounter the book? Did you know about it from its initial release?

I think I missed it when it came around the very first time. The work had originally been intended for “Pacific Presents,” the anthology best remembered for the early “Rocketeer” appearances, but that book went away before it saw print. When the material first came out, it was buried in a glut of 3-D material that Blackthorne Publishing was putting out - technically issues 6 and 9 of a series that included everything from “Gumby” to “Rambo” - so I think I missed it the first time, but I did eventually discover both the back issues of that edition and the non-3-D collected edition that Blackthorne put out in 1989, after “Concrete” had created Paul Chadwick fans. I probably really found it in '89.

You secured the rights to “Salimba” from Perry at a time when we sadly know that he was in tough financial straits. How did that come about and what did it involve?

I had heard about Perry's health and financial problems - various people in the comics community were doing a good job of spreading the word. For those who don't know, Perry was not only living in poverty but dying of cancer, and there wasn't that much hope that he would live long. I had sent him a few bucks myself, not because I knew him - I'd never met him - but a little because I had real respect for some of his work, but more importantly because I could see myself in his shoes. We've both been comics writers, both written for animation, his son Leo is the same age as my daughter, and we've both made good decisions and bad decisions over the years. Maybe it's an imperfect instinct to feel for those who are most like ourselves, but it's better than not feeling for anyone.

I heard from a friend of his, Jim Wheelock, that Chadwick had made a gift of his share of the “Salimba” rights to Perry, and Perry was trying to find a publishing home for it to raise some much-needed cash. He had to not only worry about his day-to-day living for himself and his son, but there were steep medical expenses, and there was the hope of doing whatever he could to make sure there was a good home for his son should he pass away. When I heard that he was looking for a publisher for “Salimba,” I took a while thinking about it - longer than I should have - and I realized that the problem of setting up a publishing deal, at least a standard reprint deal in the direct market, is that it doesn't generate money quickly. Between cutting the deal, getting the book prepared, soliciting it months in advance of publication, publishing it, waiting for the distributors to pay for the copies and then waiting for the publisher to cut a royalty check, you can reasonably expect it to be at least a year between publisher interest and actually seeing money.

Perry didn't likely have a year, so I wanted to give him an idea of how to raise the most money quickly, and that would be to have an auction and auction off all of the rights - the copyrights to the stories, the characters, any trademarks. That way, instead of going from publisher to publisher, figuring out what deal is possible, you get publishers bidding against one another, and with a little appropriate publicity, perhaps reaching interested parties who they wouldn't think of reaching out to - film companies, people planning as-yet-unannounced publishing lines, whatever. To encourage him, I guaranteed an opening bid. It wasn't a huge amount of money - I was confident that others would bid more - but it reflected what the property was worth to me, to my About Comics line.

What I hadn't expected is that Perry was so eager for money now, rather than waiting for an auction to be publicized, that he took my opening bid and immediately sold it to me for that.

How involved with the book was Perry prior to his death earlier this year?

The deal was made early this year. There wasn't a lot of specific planning to be done; it's largely a reprint book. However, once I bought the rights, there was one more thing Perry wanted to do - he had an idea for a Salimba prose story that he had never finished up. He offered me one-time publishing rights for one price, or ownership of the copyright for a larger price. I paid the larger price, and he finished up "Baby," a new tale that runs over 10,000 words, longer than either of us expected it to be. He and I joked about how some elements of the comics press would cover it as "Evil Publisher Buys Dying Creator's Baby."

The story is a tale of drugs and murder and the child left behind. While both of us expected that Perry may not see its publication - when he sent the final manuscript, he noted that it was the last piece of fiction he'd ever finish - neither of us realized how those themes would be reflected in the way that Perry's end actually came. Well, we knew the child would be left behind.

How did you connect with Steve Bissette to work on the book?

Bissette and I have known each other for decades; we've never actually met, but we were in an Amateur Press Association together way back when, and I've published a story of his in the anthology "24 Hour Comics," so he gets a check from me every year. When I decided to reach out to Perry with my idea of auctioning off “Salimba,” Bissette sweetened the pot on the work by promising an introduction or an illustration. Eventually this morphed into a couple of illustrations, bringing some visuals to the driving prose of "Baby."

You’re also donating to the Hero Initiative. What are you giving exactly and why did you feel this was important?

We're giving 10% of the print run to The Hero Initiative, which means that for every nine copies About Comics gets to sell, The Hero Initiative gets one to sell. While The Hero Initiative gets some of their money out of straight-out financial donations, a lot of what they bring in is off of sales of items, whether it be art auctions or books sold at conventions and the like.

"Salimba" hits stores in October

The Hero Initiative is a charity that is dear to me, because they help some deserving folks [Editor's note: Hero Initiative is a charity that helps veteran comics creators in need]. They were a great help to Steve Gerber, who was sort of my mentor as a writer, in his final years. They've helped Gene Colan. They've helped Bill Loebs. And these are just some of the folks I've published who they've helped. So we've been helping The Hero Initiative for years. We auctioned off the right for someone to put a message in a word balloon on the cover of “Licensable Bear™” #4, for example. When that particular issue ended up becoming a sought-after collectors' item [Editor's note: This issue was the first comic book with a Barack Obama appearance, beating others by more than a year], we came out with an ultra-limited second edition with an Obama-themed cover, just for The Hero Initiative.

Most relevantly to this, they were helping Steve Perry during his tough times. So while this isn't a "charity book" - buying the rights was a business deal for me, and I'm hoping to make money publishing it - I wanted the book to help The Hero Initiative help the next creator in need as well.

Judy of the Jungle. She is a pretty obscure character. Judy appeared in Exciting Comics published by Standard Comics. Her first appearance was in #55 and she lasted for 14 issues. She was predated in Exciting Comics by Kara Jungle Princess, but I have never seen the earlier comics or scans of Kara. Judy had a Black Panther named Kala and a friend named Pistol Roberts, a park ranger. She is fairly independent character and the one book I have her in has the best cat fight I have seen in comics(name calling, blood, etc ... no hair pulling though : ) These comics are quite collectable due the great covers by Schomburg. Again, another incomplete origin. Let me know if you know more. Frank Frazetta even took a turn drawing some earlier tales.

Here is a cool little fun fact I found out..." In 1975 Universal Studios art department created three concept art pieces of Raquel Welch as Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. She wanted to play Sheena but copyright delays forced Raquel to leave the project. She would have made a great Sheena. This Sheena concept poster was painted by an unknown artist from Universal Studios art department. Of the three, my favorite one.
